The incidence of penicillin-resistant staphylococci in a semi-closed community.

چکیده
Barber and Rozwadowska-Dowzenko (1948) recorded that naturally resistant penicillinase-producing staphylococci found within hospital communities had increased in the previous successive three years from 14% to 38% and then to 59%. Forbes (1949) isolated resistant staphylococci from 23 out of 50 nurses. Martin and Whitehead (1949) examined the nose, throat, saliva, and skin of 50 medical students and laboratory workers and found the carrier rate of resistant staphylococci to be 19.4% in this semi-closed community. In view of the increasing incidence of resistant staphylococci in closed communities, it was decided to investigate the carrier state in another type of semiclosed community. The community chosen was a boys' grammar school. A constant set of 30 16-year-old boys occupying the same classroom had both anterior nares swabbed for the isolation of staphylococci. They were swabbed monthly over a period of 12 months. The tube coagulase test was used to recognize Staph. pyogenes; strains were regarded as penicillin-resistant if their growth was inhibited by 0.25 to 0.5 units penicillin per ml. All resistant strains produced sufficient penicillinase after 18 hours' incubation to neutralize 30 units penicillin per ml.

A study of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from bovine mastitis for the presence of penicillin and methicillin resistance-encoding genes in the north west of Iran
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are often associated with bovine mastitis and may be resistant to antimicrobial therapy. The aim of the current study was to investigate the presence of blaZ (responsible for penicillin resistance) and mecA (responsible for methicillin resistance) genes among 108 CoNS belonging to 9 different species isolated from bovine mastitis in seven dairy herds (H1-...

Staphylococci isolated from 98 mastitic cow’s milk samples were analyzed for the production of alpha, beta and delta-hemolysin on sheep, bovine and horse red blood cells and in vitro susceptibility to several antimicrobial agents. Out of a total of 18 isolated strains, 100% demonstrated hemolytic activity either alone or in combined forms. Among 8 isolates of S. aureus 3 isolates produced α/β an...

The emergence of Staphylococcus strains resistant to methicillin occurred shortly after the introduction of methicillin into clinical use . Resistance to methicillin in clinical isolates of Staphylococci has been explained by the production of a characteristic penicillin-binding protein (PBP) , designated PBP2a, that has a decrea...

The use of the quantitative nasal culture was investigated as a means of evaluation of new antimicrobial drugs in man. Cyclacillin was somewhat more active in vitro than penicillin G against penicillin G-resistant organisms. Cyclacillin was highly effective in suppressing staphylococci susceptible to penicillin G in nasal carriers but did not suppress staphylococci resistant to penicillin G. Al...
